The Self-Image Cycle

So, finding Seth Godin is articulating how Negative Self-Talk can only be addressed by overwhelming it with Positive Self-Talk on his blog this week was great to see:

You cannot reason with negative self talk or somehow persuade it that the world disagrees. All you can do is surround it with positive self talk, drown it out and overwhelm it with concrete building blocks of great work, the combination of expectation, obligation and possibility.

How do you develop Positive Self-Talk?

But where do you start?  Learning how to develop your Positive Self-Talk if you've spent your whole life engaging in Negative Self-Talk can be like trying to turn the Titanic.  One simple exercise you can adopt immediately is to start thinking how you would talk to a friend who was saying the things that you say to yourself.  Did you read my post about the Empty Chair Exercise?  If not, have a read now....

  1. see im terrible i let my head do most of my talking and it scares me a lot , im so negative in my head but possitive or try to show possitive so its a constant battle with me

    • It’s a common issue Lisa. If you can, try to imagine what the voice in your head looks like, and think about how it sounds. Now, imagine that the voice turns into a silly character with a funny, high-pitched, squeaky voice that you wouldn’t pay any real attention to. When you’ve got this image clear in your head, think of it every time your inner voice is being negative xxx

    • Absolutely! Negative or stressful thoughts impact our body chemistry and there are all sorts of links being explored with how that affects our physical state.
