Flying in Formation

Driving on the outskirts of Sedgefield the other day, I was momentarily shocked when a huge plane appeared very low above the trees that lined the road.  When I say low, I mean the kind of heights that would indicate it was very close to landing although I don’t think I was near an airstrip.  To my uneducated eye, it looked like a World War II plane and I was so fascinated that for a few moments I was probably driving a bit erratically as I rubbernecked to get a better look.

Blog post by Gillian Lewis: Spectrum Coaching and Consultancy about geese flying in formationOf course, this got me thinking about war and how lives depend on teams working together and that took me back to the picture of geese  I posted a couple of weeks ago which showed the statistic I’d heard that geese travelled 72% further in formation than when flying on their own.

Emma Harle of Elrah Consulting, one of the people who responded to the photo, linked to a blog post she had written that gave even more info about the ways in which geese work together to be more effective. The bit that really stuck with me was that if a goose was injured and needed to land, two of its flock would fall out and support it till it was better or died, which I thought was a remarkable parallel to what would happen with soldiers in wartime.

For the majority of us, for the majority of time, obstacles we encounter are not life and death situations but there are things that can knock us off course – and being coached to get back into formation moving towards your destination is a way to get to where you need to be that much faster.
