Fresh Faced

When I was on holiday I spent most of my time not wearing make-up, apart from lipstick.  Well, spending all day on the beach, or on a boat, going in and out of the water, there was very little point in spending time applying make-up that would be washed off within minutes.

I did start wearing make-up to dinner but, as the holiday went by, I was liking the way my freckles were developing (I don’t tan), so I decided to dispense with everything apart from the lipstick and go fresh-faced.

It took a few days to venture back into my make-up bag because I came back with a bug and wasn’t going anywhere :-S  I dispensed with foundation and just wore primer to soften and diffuse my skin texture plus my blusher and eye make-up.  However, to the eyes I retrained whilst away, it looked heavy and unflattering – although it is exactly the same as I wore normally. So, I’ve been experimenting with a lighter look till my freckles fade by wearing a tinted moisturiser, and I’ll get back into wearing foundation by winter.

This goes back to my “Natural” Style Personality preference.  Most of the time, I don’t like to wear make up which is too obvious. I want to enhance my features rather than completely hiding behind a mask of make-up but ask me to go out without any make up on and I baulk!

Make-up boosts Self-Esteem

I know that it’s a largely false belief that I have about wearing make-up – but it has a significant effect on my self-image and that boosts my self-esteem and confidence!  I realised this when I took my #nomakeupselfie pictures back in March.

Gillian Lewis: Spectrum make-up boosts self-esteemLooking at the before and after comparison, there’s really very little difference; I look a little tired but I know that, even if I just applied lipstick, most of that effect would be eliminated as lipstick is such a quick pick-me-up as far as our outward persona is concerned.

Being happy with the image that we see in the mirror has such a huge effect on the way that we feel about ourselves and the way we interact with others.  There is an ever increasing focus on image in the media that permeates through all of our social interactions which makes us doubt and compare ourselves, and be unhappy with our looks.  Overall, it is leading to a rise in body dysmorphia which results in plastic surgery, and eating disorders to try to create the same bodies that we see in magazine adverts (that are very heavily photoshopped and very unrealistic) and that can ruin lives.

Whilst most people are not at these levels, there are very few women who have not, at some point in their lives, given in to negative self-talk that has been detrimental to them.  This video really sums it up:

The whole area of negative self-talk breaks my heart because we are all insidiously affecting our self-esteem and overall confidence as a result – and nobody needs to do that!

If you find it difficult to break the habit of a lifetime, give me a call and we can talk about how you can stop the cycle.

I'd love to hear your comments on this post
