How old am I?

If I knew more about Google Analytics, I might know whether the search term I saw pop up on this website from a visitor was because somebody was trying to find out about me, or whether it was about another Gillian Lewis (maybe Gillian Lewis, the English Character actress who I think may have been the inspiration for me being called Gillian): "How old is Gillian Lewis".

Age is a funny thing.  It's just a number?  You're as old as you feel?  You're as old as who you see in the mirror?  You're as old as who you see in photographs purporting to be of you?

How old is Gillian Lewis

Untouched up from February 2015

I have to acknowledge that very soon I will no longer be in my mid forties.  I'll be in my late forties.

Nearly 50 in fact!

However, I'm not really bothered about my age.  I don't feel I should hide under the covers like my oldest friend does when birthdays come around.  I'm not entirely sure how I should feel at this point, but I certainly don't feel middle aged apart from when my lower back is creaking and I stagger out of bed in the morning.

Sometimes I'm quite proud of my age - but that is because I know that I don't look it, and maybe it's when I say things like I've lived in County Durham for 25 years that people wonder at what point I moved here and then google "How old is Gillian Lewis".

I don't wear a huge amount of make-up, but I am meticulous about cleansing, toning and moisturising twice a day to keep my skin looking as good as it possibly can.  I've had botox in the past, and keep thinking I must make an appointment to iron out the frown line I have between my eyebrows but the lines round my eyes are OK because they show I smile a lot, and I've been blessed with virtually no lines on my forehead.

Whilst I'm happy to have a few grey hairs showing, I can see that my attempts to have highlights that make my hair look sunkissed are going to have to ramp up a bit more in the future which is a bit of a nusiance - but I'm resisting that for as long as I can.

However, for some people, ageing is a depressing subject.  They mourn the loss of the person they were.  They try to turn back the clock with clothes, cosmetics, beauty treatments, non-invasive procedures or cosmetic surgery to stay as they were.  They aren't happy with themselves or who they see in the mirror.  It can have a profound effect on their self-image - which maybe wasn't as good as it could have been to start with.

Many women hold insecurities about themselves and their appearance, and the reason I was drawn to what I do is because I saw how friends and clients beat themselves up about who they saw in the mirror.  Or, maybe more correctly, who they didn't see in the mirror because they couldn't actually bring themselves to focus on their face.

If that describes you, I'd like to help you recognise your beauty.  To feel great about who you are right now.  To love yourself.
