Nervous as a kitten

Do you wonder what the internet is for other than watching videos of kittens? I confess, I get sucked in a little too often, and last week I found myself watching a video of a kitten falling asleep whilst sitting up (scroll down to see that). It reminded me of the day that that my cat, Fergus Mackenzie, arrived as a 6 week old bundle of fur and he went from full of beans to fast asleep in a blink. I knew there were photos of him doing this and I went searching on my laptop to show them to my chap.

And then I found this photo and it immediately made me think of the fear that you have about leaping into the unknown.

Should I jump or not?

For a tiny kitten, leaping over the edge can be a terrifying prospect – there is that huge drop after all – but usually they are brave enough to make the leap, which sometimes belies the phrase “nervous as a kitten” because the world is full of excitement and wonder to them. Kittens have to make a leap to experience some of those wonders; they don’t consider the consequences, they just go for it - a bit like little kids till they are told off too often and start to consider the consequences.

As adults, when you are faced with a big decision to make, it is easy to let previous experiences cloud your judgement about whether you should take a leap into the unknown. We think we know what it’s going to be like – although the reality is that we often imagine what it is going to be like. Frequently we focus on the negatives instead of looking at the positives of opportunities that are presented to us (and it’s possible you may not believe that what you are being offered is an opportunity but most things in life do turn out to be, in some way: an opportunity to win or to learn).

Just think about how often have you done something which terrified you, something that you had built up to be a huge leap you had to take out of your comfort zone, something you had never, ever thought you could do?

And how did it feel afterwards?

Have you ever done something which terrified you?  And how did it feel afterwards?

Were these some of the things you said to yourself?

I never believed I could do that

I can't believe I was so worked up about it

That was so much more fun than I thought it would be

I want to do it again!

Often taking the biggest leaps leads to the greatest thrill when you've taken the step and it all turns out OK. Just think about rollercoasters: the ones that are most thrilling are the ones that have huge drops, twists and turns - it's not quite so exciting going along on a minature steam railway is it? Now, I'm not suggesting that you would want to live your life on a rollercoaster (and, indeed, I don't get too excited by rollercoasters - prefer the waltzers myself :-D), but I want you to think about the upsides of taking that first step towards the thing that you've never thought you could achieve, or the thing that terrifies you, or the thing you've been putting off.

I believe we each have the capability to achieve our dreams but...

Do you need somebody to help YOU believe you can do it?

Do you need somebody to encourage you to take the step?

Do you need further support to break down the steps that you need to take to identify what you could achieve to take your further towards your goal?

Sometimes just the briefest conversation can help you to start on the course towards happiness or to achieve your dreams

I once had one of those conversations and it encouraged me to take a huge leap. I never regretted making the decision to jump but I have wondered on so many occasions what would have happened if I'd not been brave enough - if I'd stayed nervous as a kitten.

As a result of my experience, I offer a complimentary 30 minute Confidence Discovery session to help people like you explore what's stopping you from moving forward.

PS For the kitten enthusiasts, here's the set of photos that I was looking for originally:

And the video that started me on my search. I am biased in saying that Fergus is cuter of course 😀
