No chafing – or what to wear under a Maxi-dress

Doing my holiday packing, I’d planned to take three maxi dresses since, as regular readers know, I’ve discovered them this summer and think they are wonderful 😀

I was going to Egypt, and I knew the weather was going to be hot, so I expected that I would only be able to wear the dresses in the evening when it was cooler.  This is because I suffer, (this maybe TMI for some) as many people do, from chafing between my thighs when I sweat heavily.  This leaves me with a sweat rash that is sore and can take some time to heal properly.

I had found a cream called BodyGlide, which created a frictionless barrier to sweat, and that worked quite effectively, but now my friend Amanda has launched her new range of underwear, Chaffree.  This is a range which has been designed specifically for people who sweat and chafe in their underwear.  For some people, this is an ongoing and painful problem, although in normal circumstances I can’t say that I suffer – and with UK temperatures, I wasn’t having a problem with my maxi dresses.  However, in 40-45° heat, I knew it would be an issue.

I met Amanda at an event last year and, since we only live about 60 miles apart, we’ve met a few times for lunch and to chat about our respective business plans, and, in fact, we’ve been out today which is prompting me to get this blog post up.  Amanda has been passionate about her reasons for developing the Chaffree range, and it has been fascinating to find out some of the challenges inherent in a small scale clothes manufacturing process, however, I’d never seen her knickers as a product that I would ever use till I was thinking about my holiday packing.

Three days before I was flying out, I’d logged into Facebook (as you do) and found I had an invite from Amanda to like her Chaffree Facebook page, so I had a look at the website that had just launched, and had a Eureka moment – a pair of Knickerboxers would do the trick!

I sent Amanda a message: “If I place an order on Wednesday morning could you get them to me by Thursday?”  Yes she could!

I signed up for the newsletter which gave me an introductory 10% discount (on top of the discount you get if you buy in bulk), decided the Blossom and Truffle colours would work for me, and placed my order.  Sadly the Truffle Knickerboxers were on back order (arriving later the day I left for my holiday), but Amanda was very kind enough to send me a pair of the Truffle briefs to road test for her, and I said I’d give feedback.

I opened the packages and tried on the Knickerboxers before running downstairs and getting my chap’s hopes up as he saw me through the staircase: the Blossom shade is very close to my naked skin tone! 😀  The Knickerboxers themselves are as practical, light, and comfortable to wear as Amanda had intended, but you’re not going to induce much passion….  They are seriously Big Girl’s Pants 😀

By contrast, the briefs are very simply designed and, if I didn’t prefer to wear a thong, I could see these being very simple staple of my underwear drawer as they were a great neutral colour.

So to the task in hand: wearing my Knickerboxers to Luxor in Egypt for a full day of sightseeing which was starting at 5am and finishing at 9pm.  It was a windless day with the temperature pushing 45 degrees.  I have to say they stood up excellently to the conditions, in spite of the fact that everything I wore was *soaked* with sweat!

In this extreme test, the Knickerboxers were not uncomfortable to wear: they didn’t feel completely sodden like the rest of my clothes, and the wicking properties came into their own whenever I was able to get back into the air-conditioned car and had the chance to return to a normal temperature.  The extremely stretchy fabric was truly hard to detect – which is one of the aims of the Chaffree brand: “So good you won’t know it’s on” and the legs stayed in place, protecting me from developing a sweat rash.  In normal UK temperatures, these would be very comfortable to wear.

When I got back to the hotel room at night, I got out my travel wash and rinsed through the Knickerboxers in the sink; lightly handwringing them before hanging them in the shower to drip overnight.  I was amazed that they were virtually dry the following morning – so a washing machine would have them perfectly dry.

These were great purchase for my holiday, and if I’m wearing a maxi-dress and looking very comfortable in the future, Chaffree Knickerboxers may well be my secret!

I have a perfect solution for your thigh chafing. Bandelettes (www.bandelettes.com ) is a excellent and sexy solution for thigh chafing. I have been using them since the beginning of summer and they are miracle workers on keeping your thighs from chafing. Also, they are made with silicone to keep them from moving around on you. This is a great solution for chafing and something you should definitely check out.

    • Thanks Vanessa. I’ve come across Bandelettes but too much like the tops of hold-up stockings for my liking (where the silicone degrades) and you can’t pop them in the washing machine like Chaffree.
