Does comparing yourself affect your confidence?

I was at Swiss Ball class this week in an effort to keep fit. I've been doing this class for nearly 2 years now and, although we change our exercises on a weekly basis, I've got to know most of the exercises over that time. I don't think it's an easy class: I'm huffing and puffing, and usually the day afterwards my core stomach muscles are aching from the work I've put in (and that makes me feel all virtuous and like I can eat cakes for the rest of the week :-D).

Lucky Pants – does your underwear give you confidence?

I recently attended a workshop with the irrepressible Steve Thompson at Teesside University (www.steve-thompson.org.uk).  We were discussing confidence and how, if you employ a "fake it till you make it" approach, you will constantly nudge at the edges of your comfort zone before finally realising that you do have confidence in a particular field.

Replay: Inspiring Change – International Women’s Day 2014

Yesterday was International Women's Day and I wrote a blog post inspired by the theme: #MakeItHappen.  Today I'm going to replay a post I wrote last year for the same event: Inspiring Change - International Women's Day 2014.

Uma Thurman – were people too quick to judge her makeup?

A couple of weeks ago, Uma Thurman was photographed, and the tabloid press were quick to judge her since she looked quite different to previous photographs that had been taken.  Now, a lot of the photos that they were comparing her to were quite old, and yes, she did look different, but the assumption was that she must have had some *work* done on her face.  Her make-up artist came out in her defence to say it was because she had gone out without mascara.

Belt up – why wearing a belt doesn’t create a waist

It was the Oscars last night, and today the Internet is awash with photographs of actresses in their red carpet outfits.  Of course, there is commentary about the best and worst dressed - and I even saw one actress appearing on both lists so clearly there's a question of personal taste coming into it, but the one that stood out to me (for the wrong reasons) was Nicole Kidman's dress which was a shimmering pale gold on ivory which she was wearing a belt with.

Keeping up appearances – do you?

I’ve just read an article in the Metro that reports on a survey carried out. The survey identified the lengths to which some women are keeping up appearances. Apparently one in twenty of the 2000 surveyed will not allow themselves to be seen without a full face of makeup by their husbands or boyfriends! [Read more…]

Former Fat Person

Does anybody ever get over their body image when they lose a significant amount of weight?  It was Kelly Osbourne who first coined the phrase "Former Fat Person" when she was talking about how she viewed herself after losing 70lbs.

Nervous as a kitten

Do you wonder what the internet is for other than watching videos of kittens? I confess, I get sucked in a little too often, and last week I found myself watching a video of a kitten falling asleep whilst sitting up (scroll down to see that). It reminded me of the day that that my cat, Fergus Mackenzie, arrived as a 6 week old bundle of fur and he went from full of beans to fast asleep in a blink. I knew there were photos of him doing this and I went searching on my laptop to show them to my chap.

Women who wear 4 inch stiletto heels – I salute you!

I’m going out for dinner this evening, and trying to decide whether to wear my new 4 inch stiletto heels.  They are beautiful, they are leg-lengthening, they give an opportunity to view the world from a different perspective – but I find them very difficult to walk in with any grace! [Read more…]

Fresh Faced

When I was on holiday I spent most of my time not wearing make-up, apart from lipstick.  Well, spending all day on the beach, or on a boat, going in and out of the water, there was very little point in spending time applying make-up that would be washed off within minutes.

I did start wearing make-up to dinner but, as the holiday went by, I was liking the way my freckles were developing (I don’t tan), so I decided to dispense with everything apart from the lipstick and go fresh-faced.
