Wardrobe Decluttering for Men

Decluttering!  Everybody talks about doing it - "I've got too much STUFF!"  It's a ongoing task for some, and I'm always recommending wardrobe decluttering when my clients come for a consultation because it's the best way of implementing wearing colours and clothes that flatter you all the time because you don't have the wrong things to fall back on (or you at least know they aren't the best items for you and you can work to replace them in future shopping trips).

In my personal aim for decluttering my stuff, I bought "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying: A simple, effective way to banish clutter forever" by Marie Kondo - in Kindle of course because otherwise that would be another book to add to the clutter πŸ˜€

I read the book in one evening and started to declutter my wardrobe the following morning.  Most of my clothes I do love (a major requirement of the Kon Mari Method), and I do have them grouped together to make it easier to work through the process, but I learned about vertical stacking and sushi roll socks so my knitwear and underwear drawers have never been so tidy.

One evening last week, I was watching my boyfriend pairing his socks in the time-honoured tradition of folding the cuff back to make a ball, and I told him that Marie Kondo recommends thanking your clothing every time you wear it, treating it reverentially, and giving it space to breathe so it can recover before you wear it again. His look told me he thought I was off on a woo-woo belief again.

Then on Friday, he was packing to go away for the Saturday night and said "I need to change the shirt I'm taking, can you come and go through some things for me?"

Now, as his own personal stylist, I'm quite used to him asking for an opinion on what to wear, or when buying something new, so it wasn't a surprise.  The surprise was that the "going through some things" actually meant doing a wardrobe declutter for him!

Completing Wardrobe Decluttering for a Man

It was pretty easy to do a quick edit as he's got his work suits and shirts down to a tee (although the ties need a bit of work), and most of his casual wardrobe suits him, but the subtleties of being Cool, Deep, Soft go over his head and he thinks that all he has to do is avoid beige.  Even so, I whisked about 15 shirts, jumpers and t-shirts out to look at more closely.

Wardrobe Decluttering for men - the shirts that were removed

Since it was late in the evening, and the light wasn't great, I knew that I would have to have a better look in the morning, but, when he saw what I had removed, my boyfriend's face was one of dismay.

"You can't put all of those out, I won't have anything to wear" he said as he opened his wardrobe to see that actually he did have plenty left to wear - and this was just wardrobe number one.

Then he looked at what I'd removed.  The excuses started:

  • But I like that
  • I wear that
  • That was expensive
  • I only wear that on holiday

Yes, all of those things might have been true, but if you're going to ask for a Wardrobe Declutter, the whole purpose is to do it properly and that might mean you have to give up things that were expensive and you wear, and maybe things that you love too - because they're not doing anything to flatter you.

At this stage, back-pedalling kicked in: "Maybe you can do the short sleeved shirts another time....."
